Introducing Judith Hudson by Nancy Fraser #RomanceGems

Tomorrow we move to the wonderful new Romance Gems site! Be sure and visit there Friday, February 1, for the Grand Opening. Throughout January I was fortunate enough to be able to introduce you to a number of new-to-the-GEMS authors. Today is no exception.

Today it’s my pleasure to welcome our final new author, Judith Hudson, to the blog!

Getting to Know Judy

Judy writes small town romance novels with more heart than heat.  "Pretty well any combination of people can make a strong family unit these days," she says, "as long as there is love."

Born in Toronto, she went to high school in St. Louis and raised her family on Vancouver Island in Pacific Northwest, in a community much like Fortune Bay, the setting of her novels. Her background as a landscape painter makes the lakes, forest and mountains come alive in her books, and her love of gardening, cooking and photography also inspires her work.

You can find opening chapters of her books on her website, as well as links to her reader’s group and a free e-copy of the series prequel novella, Lake of Dreams.

Judy’s Path to Becoming an Author?

My father was a writer so I knew it could be done. I knew that what it took to be a writer was to write. It’s a combination of imagination and hard work—or “butt in the chair”, as writers like to say. He wrote for TV and before that radio, but unfortunately, died before he got a chance to write his great novel. But his legacy to me was knowing that it could be done.

But first I had to run a gauntlet of fine arts first. I was a painter for more years than I can count while my children were in school, painting in oils en plein aire, outside, near my home on oh-so-beautiful Vancouver Island. Then I started taking university classes in photography, including darkroom photography, (that comes into the story later,) eventually getting my degree in Fine Art in 2000, specializing in painting, photography and printmaking.

I sold a lot of paintings, but I painted more, and eventually was crushed under the burden of all those paintings. One day I walked out of my studio and didn’t go back for two years. It was a time we were travelling a lot and I started to write travel articles—writing a lot, putting them together with my photographs, and selling a few. If I’d been savvier then, I would have started a blog, but that was the early 2000s and I wasn’t that smart.

Then one day I was chained to the couch after a foot operation, had a new laptop and my husband was called away on a family emergency for two weeks, and I thought I’d just write up the story that had been swirling in my head for years, ever since we’d lived in Honeymoon Bay on Vancouver Island, a village that bears an uncanny resemblance to Fortune Bay, the location of my romance series. That turned into Summer of Fortune, the first full length book in the series, about Maddie, a single mother who finds herself with a summer of freedom and decides to finally launch her career as—wait for it—a dark room photographer.

Since then, I’ve been writing non-stop, and there are now seven books in the Fortune Bay series. I say they’re about friendship, family and happily-ever-after. In other words, life.

A Look at What Judy Writes

Colleen Murphy’s back on Majestic Lake for the summer, living in the cabin, helping out at the marina and looking for romance with Mr. Right. Her maternal time bomb isn’t just ticking, it’s ready to explode. When her live-in artist partner tells her his plans don’t include a family, Colleen heads home to Fortune Bay. Working in Seattle didn’t suit her anyway, away from the lake and forest she loves, so she’s back on Majestic Lake for the summer, living in the cabin, helping out at the marina and looking for Mr. Right.

Since his wife’s death two years ago, Alex Potter has struggled to stay afloat. Now, losing his grandfather, always his rock in the tough times, is the last straw. The day after the funeral, Alex goes AWOL from the family firm and retreats to his grandfather’s island lake house in Fortune Bay, the only place he’s ever really felt at home.

Alex seems to be a secretive drifter, not the solid family guy Colleen is looking for. But as together they spearhead a local environmental battle, they both wonder if they might have found something worth fighting for.

You can read the first Chapter of Lake of Dreams HERE.

Get a free e-copy of Lake of Dreams when you sign up for Judy’s readers' group, or you can buy a print copy on Amazon or B&N.

Stay or Run Away by Karen Kelley #RomanceGems

I'm excited to announce a brand new book in my Hayes Brothers series. Here's a taste of Nailed It!

“I think I’d better go.” Yes, I was running away, and I never ran away from anything. The guy was making me crazy.

Ryder leaned closer, until I could see the tiny flecks of gold in his green eyes. “Do I scare you, Samantha?”

His words scraped across my body. I swallowed past the lump in my throat. “You scare the hell out of me.” I managed to get out.

“Are you sure it’s me? Maybe you’re more scared about what you feel when you’re around me.”

Yes, I had so much fun writing this book. I love the chemistry between Ryder and Samantha. For me, that's what I like about writing and reading romance. The chemistry has got to be there.

Want to know a little bit more?  Here's the back cover blurb of Nailed It!:

When I barged into the adjoining bedroom early the next morning, I naturally expected to see my best friend, not the very naked man with a dragon tat curling around one muscular arm, or that he would make an offhand remark about my very sheer nightie.

Ryder Hayes is a smart ass, definitely no gentleman, and I never want to see him again!

Except he’s the best man, and I’m the maid of honor. I’m pretty sure he’ll ruin my idea of a fairytale wedding for my best friend.

Samantha is hot! As soon as I saw her in that nearly see-through nightie, I knew I wanted her.

But she has my number: I’m a confirmed bachelor, and plan to stay that way. She’s all about finding Mr. Right. Maybe I can convince her to have fun with Mr. Wrong until he comes along?

Yeah, I’ll be her sex toy, and she won’t even need to change my batteries.

Have a great day!

Introducing Elsa Kurt by Nancy Fraser #RomanceGems

Welcome back! It’s been an absolute joy to introduce this wonderful group of new-to-us authors to our readers. Gems in the Attic ... soon to be Romance GEMS ... is growing by leaps and bounds. In addition to these introductions, we’ve got some wonderful posts coming up that you won’t want to miss! But not today.

Today it’s my pleasure to welcome author Elsa Kurt to the blog!

Getting to Know Elsa

Elsa Kurt is a multi-genre, indie & traditionally published author & and speaker. She currently has eight novels independently published as well as three novellas published with Limitless Publishing. Her presentation, ‘You Wrote It, Now What?’ is now an adult enrichment course offering and soon-to-be online course.

She is a lifelong New England resident and married mother of two grown daughters. When not writing or talking her head off, she can be found gardening, hiking, kayaking, and just about anywhere outdoors.

How Did Elsa Become an Author?

I've been an avid reader and writer for as long as I can remember, but it wasn't until I reached my forties that I finally pursued my goal of being an author. I began with a children's book and it seemed to have open the floodgates of suppressed stories. From there I moved on to writing a young adult novel, then my first contemporary women's fiction novel, called Livvy Takes the Long Way, and haven't stopped since. To date, I have eight novels published and three novellas. This spring I'll be releasing book three in Welcome to Chance and a 'passion project' I'm working on.

A Look at What Elsa Writes

Welcome to the small, coastal New England town of Chance. It's a place where everyone knows your name... and your business. In book one of this charming series - Mae's Cafe - we meet William, the handsome stranger who's come to town,  feisty Feather Anne, the beloved matriarch and patriarch of Chance, the Brightsiders. You'll get to know arrogant Miles and painfully shy Rosabelle, the fearsome five, and of course, Mae. Pull up a seat in the cafe and get comfortable because once you're here, you won't want to leave.

Plan your visit to the town of Chance by clicking over to Amazon.

Introducing Lucinda Race by Nancy Fraser #RomanceGems

Welcome back! We’re closing in on the final introductions of our newest authors with only two more to go including today’s post. In addition to these introductions, we’ve got some wonderful posts coming up that you won’t want to miss! But not today.

Today it’s my pleasure to welcome author Lucinda Race to the blog!

Getting to Know Lucinda

Lucinda Race is a life long fan of romantic fiction. As a young girl, she spent hours reading novels and dreaming of, one day, becoming a writer. As life twists and turns, she found herself writing nonfiction but longed to turn to her true passion, romance novels. After developing the story line for The Loudon Series, it was time to start living her dream. Fingers flying over computer keys, two novellas and five novels have been published in the series. She has also written a trilogy to be published in 2019 and is working on something new.

Lucinda lives, with her husband Rick, and their two little dogs, Jasper and Griffin, in the rolling hills of western Massachusetts. When she’s not writing romance novels Lucinda reads everything she can get her hands on. She’s passionate about growing tomatoes and roses. Her writing is contemporary, heartwarming, and engaging.

Lucinda’s Path to Becoming an Author?

I’ve always wanted to write but never had the courage to put words on paper until one day when I was talking to a friend and I shared that most of my life I've dreamt in chapters- where characters were leading me to a path to tell their stories.

She encouraged me to write them down- telling me that "most people" don't dream that way. I started and I've never looked back.

A Look at What Lucinda Writes

After a cryptic letter appears in her mailbox and flowers are delivered anonymously, Dani Michaels’ secret past threatens to collide with her future. Out of options and tired of running Dani confesses the danger she’s in to her friends.
With her best friend, Ellie McKenna, by her side, Dani finds help from Loudon’s finest policemen, namely Ellie’s fiancĂ©, Pad Stone, and his partner, Paul Greene.

As Dani is dragged deeper into the danger zone, Ellie, Pad and Paul are determined to save her. Will the smoldering sparks ignite between Dani and the handsome Officer Greene allowing her to have the future she’s longed for or will her past destroy her future?

You can find Magic in the Rain on Amazon.

Introducing Kari Lemor by Nancy Fraser #RomanceGems

Welcome back! We're closing in on the end of the month and, with it, the end of the Gems in the Attic blog as we've known it in the past. Beginning February 1st, we'll become Romance Gems. Along with our new name and site, we're also fortunate to have a dozen new-to-us authors. You've already met some of them but we still four more to go.

Today it’s my pleasure to welcome author Kari Lemor to the blog!

Getting to Know Kari

Kari Lemor has always been a voracious reader. One of those kids who had the book under the covers or under the desk at school. Even now she has been known to stay up until the wee hours finishing a good book. Romance has always been her favorite, stories of people fighting through conflict to reach their happily ever after.
Now that her kids are all grown and have moved out, she uses her spare time to create character driven stories of love and hope, often with a splash of danger.  She lives with her husband in a small town in New England dreaming of warmer weather.  But only if it's near the ocean.

Her romantic suspense series, Love on the Line, is about ex-military men who have bonded close as brothers, and the feisty women who love them.

When Did Kari Know She Would Become a Writer?

I’ve read so many author bios that say this author has wanted to become a writer since they were a child. Not so for me. I hated writing in school. If you had said I would become a writer I would have laughed. Only now do I realize it’s because I was always told what to write. No one ever told me I could create my own world and tell the story of two people finding their way to each other.

I’d always had stories in my head though, and each night to fall asleep, I would create scenarios and let them play out. My first attempt at writing was with a group of ladies online doing what is called fan fiction. Writing stories based on already established characters and worlds. I got so many followers and readers, my oldest daughter told me I should try and write something original to earn money.  So with an original story and characters, I began. All the years and words of writing fan fiction had helped me hone my craft. I joined online writer groups and attended conferences and workshops and started subbing my work. I made so many new friends who have been incredibly helpful. And with the help of these wonderful people I have finally succeeded in truly being an author.

A Look at What Kari Writes

An innocent in the crossfire . . .

FBI agent Jack Holland broke every rule in the book falling for the girlfriend of Angelo Cabrini, son of a New Jersey mob boss. But even if Callie Lansing’s relationship to Angelo was actually a cover and her heart was free, her relationship with Jack put both of their lives at risk. Nothing, though, could make Jack regret the liaison that led to the birth of their son, Jonathan.

After Angelo discovered Callie’s pregnancy, he went after Jack and wound up dead. Now Jack is on the run with a target on his back. The only thing keeping Callie and Jonathan safe is the mob boss's belief that the baby is his grandchild. But if Victor Cabrini discovers the truth before Jack can put him behind bars, it could mean death for his sweet covert family. . . .

You can find Running Target on Amazon.

Love is Not a Triangle by Connie Vines

A love triangle: (also called a romantic love triangle or a romance triangle) is usually a romantic relationship involving three people. While it can refer to two people independently romantically linked with a third, it usually implies that each of the three people has some kind of relationship to the other two.       đŸ”ș

I don’t like love triangles. Maybe it’s because I’ve never been in one, but I find it difficult to believe that a character cannot decide between two love interests.   I also find it extremely difficult to finish a novel featuring a love triangle.

Yes, I am aware love triangles are all over literature. I’ve heard them described as: complex, dramatic, and wildly unpredictable.  The uncertainties and decision-making that plagues characters in these stories often parallel our own circumstances and fears.

Three love triangles that have made impressions on many readers everywhere.

1. Gone with the Wind: Scarlett O’Hara, Rhett Butler, Ashley Wilkes.

The relationship between Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler in Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with The Wind is considered, by some readers and viewers of the adaptation, an epitome of a classic romance. Others, on the other hand, may consider the relationship between O’Hara and Butler a classic example of an abusive relationship (quadrilateral if you count Melanie Hamilton).

 2.  The Great Gatsby: Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, Tom Buchanan

If there is one literary love affair that could possibly rival O’Hara and Butler’s tumultuous relationship, it just may be that of Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan. The smitten Mr. Jay Gatsby may be considered the world’s biggest romantic or stalker depending on your take.  (This was a required read my Freshman year in High School which is probably the only reason I read the entire novel.)

3. Wuthering Heights: Heathcliff, Catherine, Edgar

In a discussion of love triangles, where would we be without mentioning Wuthering Heights. Like Jay Gatsby, Heathcliff’s obsessive love has a strong hold over him, ultimately driving his over-arching desires throughout the story and proving to have a substantial impact on not only him, but everyone else around him.

Considered a tortured romantic soul, Heathcliff has lived his life deeply in love with his childhood friend Catherine who, to his revulsion, is torn between her shared desire for him and her desires for another.  (This novel, also a required read, caused me to have a nightmare.)

1. Casablanca
2. Gone with the Wind
3. Legends of the Fall

I must confess, I can watch Casablanca.  The movie is very political and the love triangle is not at the forefront of the novel.

Are you thinking, "How can she not enjoy a good love triangle?"

Remember, it's all subjective.  Read what you love to read!

As for me, if there's going to be romance, let it be between just two people. Then if there's angst, it can be worked out

As all romance readers and writers know. love conquers all!

Happy Reading,

Connie Vines

Your Opinion Counts

I love it when a reader finds my email (you can do this from my website) and writes to tell me how much she enjoyed one of my books. But I love it even more when a reader takes the same amount of time to write a little “review” of the book and posts it for everyone to see.

These reviews can be a summary of the plot along with the readers’ personal rating. BUT readers don’t have to do a complete plot summary. A simple line or two about what you love or hate about the book will do nicely. Many of my readers will write something as simple as, “I am never disappointed in a Cheryl Bolen book, and this one will delight.”

The reviews are typically posted on a site where the reader may have purchased the book, like Amazon or Barnes and Noble, Kobo, Apple Books, or Google Play. Many readers now hang out at reader sites like Goodreads and post reviews there.

Some reviewers are somewhat harsh, giving a satisfying romance a 3 because it’s not ground-breaking. I encourage reviewers to think of the 5-star rating system much as the percentage grades in school: 90-100 should be 5 stars (It doesn’t have to be perfect!); 80-89, four stars; 70-79 three stars; 60-69, two stars; and below 60, one star. That way the book is being judged against other books in its genre.

Authors strive for 4-plus star ratings, like this, on their books.

Our success as authors can depend upon the rating system. Books with reviews averaging below 4 stars often can’t qualify for special promotions. And, let’s face it, none of us want to spend our hard-earned money on a book that is rated below average.

So . . . if one of our books brings you satisfaction, we respectfully ask for a rating of . . . five! (We need those to counter the flippant reviewers’ lower number—or the reviewer who’s mad at Amazon and leaves a 1-star rating on book.)—Cheryl Bolen, whose Last Duke Standing completes her Lords of Eton trilogy of Regency romances.

Introducing Nora LeDuc by Nancy Fraser #RomanceGems

Welcome back! It’s that time again ... another new author introduction. I can’t believe how fast we’re growing. Which, of course, means more great authors and books for everyone to enjoy!

Today it’s my pleasure to welcome author Nora LeDuc to the blog!

Getting to Know Nora

Nora grew up in rural New England and still lives here. She enjoys combining her love of true crime shows with her imagination to produce romantic suspense and mysteries that you keep you guessing.

Nora is also a former Precious Gems author having written for their historical Gems line back in the day.

How Did Nora Know She’d Become an Author

I did not become a writer until I was an adult. During a period in my life when I worked two part-time jobs, was taking a class at Boston University, and keeping up with my family...I needed an escape. So, I went to Annie’s Book Stop and discovered the Romance section. There I bought and fell in love with authors such as Johanna Lindsey and Elizabeth Lowell. One day while browsing I found a Romantic Times magazine which contained an article titled “You Can Be a Romance Author.” Right then, I knew this is what I wanted. When I told my family about my new vocation, they asked how soon I’d make lots of money. They’re still waiting.

A Look at What Nora Writes

When a teenager mysteriously disappears in Hawick Falls, New Hampshire, Lisa Raynes fears her kidnapper, who recently escaped from prison, is hunting girls again. She also believes he’s targeted her for his next victim when she receives a threatening message. To add to her problems, her ex-boyfriend Travis Bodell, nephew of her captor, shows up in town. Five years ago, he promised to love Lisa forever, but he left her to start a new life. Trusting him was a mistake she will never repeat.
Bad boy Travis Bodell has a history of run-ins with the law. The police suspect he came back to aid his uncle, not to warn Lisa she’s in danger. With the investigation going nowhere, Travis focuses on Lisa who identifies with the missing teen and wants to find her. To keep Lisa safe, he offers to help her search. She refuses until loving memories of their past surface, and she finally accepts his proposal. Working together arouses strong feelings of attraction that neither will admit.

As time runs out for the kidnap victim, disturbing threats against Midnight Girl, Lisa’s online name, grow. She realizes the only way to stay alive is to open her heart and put her faith in Travis, but can she let go of her doubts and lingering hurt? Can the couple join forces and win against a cunning criminal fueled by hate?

Introducing Ana E Ross by Nancy Fraser #RomanceGems

Welcome back! It’s been an absolute joy to introduce this wonderful group of new-to-us authors to our readers. Gems in the Attic ... soon to be Romance GEMS ... is growing by leaps and bounds. In addition to these introductions, we’ve got some wonderful posts coming up that you won’t want to miss! But not today.

Today it’s my pleasure to welcome author Ana E Ross to the blog!

Getting to Know Ana

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author, Ana E Ross, was born and raised in the Caribbean where she began indulging in romance novels at a very early age.

A former Writing and English Literature teacher, Ana now writes steamy contemporary romances featuring sexy, alpha heroes and strong, beautiful heroines who fight and love with equal passion.

Her published works include three short stories, five books in her bestselling series, Billionaire Brides of Granite Falls, and three books in the spinoff series, Beyond Granite Falls. She is presently working on her Billionaire Island Brides series, featuring—once again—sexy alpha males and strong beautiful women.

Ana lives in the northeast, and loves traveling, tennis, yoga, meditation, everything Italian, and spending valuable time with her daughter.

When Did Ana Know She Would Become a Writer?

I knew I’d become an author at a very early age when I began writing script/plays for my Sunday School and youth groups at my church on my native island of Nevis. I also wrote short stories for my high school magazines/booklets. However, I knew romance would be my genre of choice at age 13 when I began reading True Stories, Jive, and Black Romance magazines my late, older sister, Delores, used to send me from St. Maarten. These stories ultimately led me to write love poems, and then romance novels.

A Look at What Ana Writes

Michelle Carter has been down on her luck since the day she was born. So it comes as no surprise when through a series of unfortunate events, she finds herself jobless, penniless, and practically homeless. In a desperate attempt to get back on her feet, Michelle accepts a job as a nanny and finds it absolutely impossible to resist her handsome, sexy billionaire boss—but resist she must for as long as she could, especially since she’s keeping secrets from him.

Believing that his late wife betrayed him with another man, falling in love again is the last thing Dr. Erik LaCrosse wants to do. But fall, he does, and so hard, he secretly marries the alluring nanny from the wrong side of the tracks. However, when he unearths a disturbing secret from Michelle’s past, Erik must choose between his loyalty to a dead woman and the love burning in his heart for one who is very much alive.

Introducing Kathryn Hills by Nancy Fraser #RomanceGems

Welcome back! It’s been an absolute joy to introduce this wonderful group of new-to-us authors to our readers. Gems in the Attic ... soon to be Romance GEMS ... is growing by leaps and bounds. In addition to these introductions, we’ve got some wonderful posts coming up that you won’t want to miss! But not today.

Today it’s my pleasure to welcome author Kathryn Hills to the blog!

Getting to Know Kathryn

Meet Kathryn Hills! Romance author, ghost hunter, and lover of things that go bump in the night.

The rich history and many mysteries of New England are the perfect setting for Kathryn and her books. Winding roads lined by old stone walls, forgotten cemeteries, grand homes with shadowy pasts... All sparks for her imagination.

Whether it’s a quaint seaside town or the vibrant city of Boston, it’s easy for this “hauntingly romantic” author to envision the past mingling with the present. No surprise, some of Kathryn’s favorite stories involve time travel. And ghosts! Sprinkle in some magic, and you’re off on a great adventure.

When not writing, she’s exploring history and taking photographs of the beautiful landscape surrounding her. Kathryn shares her colonial home with those she loves most—her wonderful husband, daughter, and three crazy dogs.

Kathryn’s Path to Becoming an Author

Unlike those who knew they were destined to be authors from a young age, my experience was more like being struck by lightning. And in typical fashion, it all began with a haunted house!

A trip to deliver Christmas presents to my sister on Cape Cod included a chance encounter with the place that sparked it all – Highfield Hall. I was running late, anxious to beat holiday traffic when my sister suggested, “Let’s go to Highfield.” I balked, and she urged, “Come on, it’s beautiful.” Wow was she right!

The stick-style Victorian was intriguing – gilded-age history with a haunting vibe I sensed from the parking lot. Once in ruins, the restored mansion was breathtaking when we toured it on that cold December day. I fell in love.

A story unfolded in my head on the long drive home. I wrote in secret, pouring words onto pages as an intricate plot fell into place. On New Year’s Day my husband asked, “What are you doing?”

I confessed. “I think I’m writing a book.”

When I explained further, he showed his true heroic nature. “You need to do this.” He encouraged me to do research, connect with other writers, and learn the craft. By summer I’d joined RWA and my regional chapter, attended a writer’s retreat and the first of many RWA conferences to come. Haunting Highland House and I were on our way!

A Look at What Kathryn Writes

She’s looking to escape her man troubles. Instead, she finds the man of her dreams. There’s only one problem. He’s dead.

Living in a haunted house and uncovering a gateway in time were not in the job description when Samantha Merrill agreed to be the property manager of Highland House. Old photos of the reclusive master of the manor captivate her, yet she’s terrified when he appears out of nowhere. How can Robert Pennington be making love to her by the parlor fireplace when he died over a century ago?

Robert Pennington is a powerful industrialist charged with caring for an ailing father, a meddling mother, and two wayward siblings. Weary of his burdens, he longs for change. Is he ready for a woman from the future? His disciplined world turns upside down when the mysterious Samantha Merrill crashes his sister’s birthday ball. He is wildly attracted to this intriguing beauty, but is it magic or mischief motivating her? When Sam vanishes before his eyes, he knows only one thing for certain.  He wants her back.

Haunting Highland House (Book 1 of the Series) is available from Amazon.

What’s one book in a series without the next? Also available, Hellfire and Handbaskets, from Amazon.

Introducing Satin Russell by Nancy Fraser #ROMANCEGEMS

Welcome back! It’s that time again ... another new author introduction. I can’t believe how fast we’re growing. Which, of course, means more great authors and books for everyone to enjoy!

Today it’s my pleasure to welcome author Satin Russell to the blog!

Getting to Know Satin

Satin Russell was a financial advisor for many years up until she decided to pursue her dream of becoming a writer back in April 2013.

It took her a year of saving and planning before she was able to commit to her goal full-time.  Her debut novel, Secret Hunger, was published in April of 2015.

Satin lives in Massachusetts and is married to the love of her life, a man who literally flew halfway around the world for her. Other than writing, she loves reading, supporting fellow authors (especially self-published ones,) traveling, and photography. She’s also partial to a good whiskey every now and then.

How Did Satin Become an Author

I think the biggest reason I wanted to become a writer is because I was such an avid reader. As a kid, I always had my nose in a book. Classics, romance, adventure, fantasy, sci-fi, you name it, I read it. In fact, there was one summer my dad even grounded me from reading – that’s how much I liked to read.

Unfortunately, as I got older, I grew away from my goal of becoming a writer. I think that happens to a lot of us as we grow up. It didn’t seem like a viable career option. Instead, I did the “adult” thing; went to school, met a man, got married, started a career in finance, and worked my 9-5 office job.

Then, in the wee hours of my 36th birthday, I woke up and thought, “How the heck did I get here?” It felt like I was doing exactly opposite of what my strengths and interests were. I was filled with feelings of restlessness and felt the need to CHOOSE the direction my life was headed. Up until that point, I wondered if it had all just been a series of reactions.

I realized that I wanted to make a change. Let me tell you, that alone is a hard decision to make. It takes a LOT (a lot, a lot…) of courage to decide you want to change your situation. Especially if what you have isn’t wholly uncomfortable. If – actually – for the most part your life is fairly good. And yet, some part of you is still unsatisfied. Left wondering, “What if?” It’s like a little splinter that keeps catching you in your instep when you’re walking.

I’m lucky. My husband listened to what I was saying and has supported my efforts. Now, I have two books published, I've met some amazing people, I've learned an incredible amount about writing, publishing, and marketing, and I can honestly say that I've never been happier!

Even a bad day of writing feels like a good day to me.

Introducing Peggy Jaeger by Nancy Fraser #RomanceGems

It’s that time again. We’re going to welcome another author to the fold! I can’t believe how fast we’re growing. Which, of course, means more great authors and books for you to enjoy!

Today it’s my pleasure to welcome author Peggy Jaeger to the blog!

What You Need to Know About Peggy

Peggy Jaeger is a contemporary romance writer who writes about strong women, the families who support them, and the men who can’t live without them.

Family and food play huge roles in Peggy’s stories because she believes there is nothing that holds a family structure together like sharing a meal…or two…or ten. Dotted with humor and characters that are as real as they are loving, Peggy brings all topics of daily life into her stories: life, death, sibling rivalry, illness and the desire for everyone to find their own happily ever after. Growing up the only child of divorced parents she longed for sisters, brothers and a family that vowed to stick together no matter what came their way. Through her books, she has created the families she wanted as that lonely child.

Tying into her love of families, her children's book, THE KINDNESS TALES, was illustrated by her artist mother-in-law.

Peggy holds a master's degree in Nursing Administration and first found publication with several articles she authored on Alzheimer's Disease during her time running an Alzheimer's in-patient care unit during the 1990s.

In 2013, she placed first in two categories in the Dixie Kane Memorial Contest: Single Title Contemporary Romance and Short/Long Contemporary Romance.

In 2017 she came in 3rd in the New England Reader's Choice contest for A KISS UNDER THE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS and was a finalist in the 2017 STILETTO contest for the same title.

In 2018, Peggy was a finalist in the HOLT MEDALLION Award and once again in the 2018 Stiletto Contest. She also came in first place in the Contemporary Romance category of the  2018 OKRWA IDA Contest.

A lifelong and avid romance reader and writer, she is a member of RWA and her local New Hampshire RWA Chapter.

When Did Peggy Know She’d Become an Author

The very first time I even picked up a pencil to write a story was when I was 8 years old and received a locked-key diary as a Christmas present. I knew I should be chronically my daily life, but I felt it was boring and no one would want to read about a lonely, chubby, myopic only child who longed for a family that would love her. So I invented an 8 year old girl who had two loving parents and 6 siblings. They traveled the world exploring ancient ruins, swimming with dolphins, and traveling to fun amusement parks. That 56 page diary got filled up pretty quickly with the tales I wrote. When there were no empty pages left to write in it, I asked for notebook so I could continue my stories. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to write for the rest of my life.

A Look at What Peggy Writes

Colleen O'Dowd manages a thriving bridal business with her sisters in Heaven, New Hampshire. After fleeing Manhattan and her cheating ex-fiancé, Colleen still believes in happily ever afters. But with a demanding business to run, her sisters to look after, and their 93-year-old grandmother to keep out of trouble, she's worried she'll never find Mr. Right.

Playboy Slade Harrington doesn't believe in marriage. His father's six weddings have taught him life is better as an unencumbered single guy. But Slade loves his little sister. He'll do anything for her, including footing the bill for her dream wedding. He doesn't plan on losing his heart to a smart-mouthed, gorgeous wedding planner, though. When her ex-fiancé comes back into the picture, Colleen must choose between Mr. Right and Mr. Right Now.

A NEW YEAR - A NEW ME @kathleenlawless

I haven’t really morphed into someone else, but as writers we are all constantly growing, changing, experimenting and challenging ourselves.  If we didn’t, we and our work, would become stale and flat.  We have freedom to change our voice.  Change our genre.  Even change our name.

After all, it worked for Nora Roberts.  She still pens her emotionally-charged romance novels, while as JD Robb she kills it in the thriller/suspense genre.

So late last year I decided to take on a second writing identity, Kaely Steel.  Kathleen Lawless is still alive and well and working on a series of Western Historical Romances, but as Kaely Steel I created an entirely new voice.  For her/my series, G Force Five, I wrote in first person, a new departure.  I also played around with present tense, but in the end wrote the books in past tense because I think it works better for storytelling.  At least it does for me.

Old school romances, for those of us who have been around that long, were always told from the heroine’s point of view.  I don’t know who broke the mold, but sometime in the 70’s the reader was introduced to the hero’s point of view, in small doses at first.  Once the readers had a taste for what really went on behind his aloof facade, they clamored for more.  As writers, we had to learn a seamless way to change points of view in our story.

For Kaely’s new Reverse Harem series that releases this month, I went a few steps further.  Along with the heroine’s POV, I sprinkled in thoughts and feelings and reactions from the five men in her life. Small doses that give the reader the chance to get to know these men better as the series progresses.

I’m back into Kathleen Lawless’ shoes now, with only two points of view in my current WIP.  Comfy shoes to be sure, but I feel my writing is stronger for having tried on Kaely Steel’s multi POV hat.

From Redeeming Jenna, G Force Five – Book 1
One thing I didn’t remember from earlier was a shiny silver dance pole beckoning to me.  I grabbed hold of the pole and did a half-twirl.  I needed some music.
As if on cue, ceiling speakers sprang to life.  A sultry jazz piece flowed over me, making movement instinctual.  I kicked off my shoes and wrapped one leg around the pole, attempting an experimental spin.
As I moved, I took a closer look at the mirrors.  What if those mirrors were two-way glass?  Which one of my heroes might be on the other side, watching me?
          Dark and brooding Wulff?
          Blond Viking Ledger?
          Scarred and handsome Hart?
          Soulful green-eyed Pierce?
          Or the blue-eyed Dare devil?
I didn’t have long to wait.

Redeeming Jenna is available now.
Protecting Bree, Book 2, is live today.  Serving Fallon releases on January 29th.
Find them on Amazon and in KU.
